CHICAGO TO PHOENIX AND RETURN, OCTOBER 1 TO 12, 2005

The following proposal is for the AAPRCO convention to be held in Williams and for the associated special trains to be operated between October 1 and October 12, 2005.

Consist: The maximum consist for planning purposes is 23 cars not including the Western cars to be picked up at Albuquerque.
Locomotives: Three Amtrak units are planned to handle up to 23 cars over Raton without HEP (not including Albuquerque pick up.) Units are to be lined up forward, forward and reverse. The operation will have a maximum size train over La Veta Pass and over Raton Pass.
Braking: The
train will operate in
direct release braking.
Speed: All
cars are approved for at
least 90 MPH operation.
Routing:
St. Oct.
1st: The Arizona
Limited special train
will depart Chicago
IL, on No. 3's route
to La
Junta, CO through
to Albequerque.
Sun.
Oct. 2: Operate
La Junta to Trinidad,
thence to Walsenberg with
a connection to the San
Luis & Rio Grande
Railroad. Operate over
La Veta Pass to Antonito
and park adjacent to the
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic
Railroad.
Mon.
Oct. 3rd: In
the morning, passengers
will have the option
of riding the steam
powered narrow gauge
Cumbres & Toltec
to Chama. and then
bus to Santa Fe or remaining
with the Arizona Limited
special for a ride
back from Antonito
to Walsenberg, Trinidad,
Lamy, to Santa Fe. The
Arizona Limited will park
overnight at Santa Fe.
Tue. Oct. 4th: In the afternoon, the Arizona Limited will operate Santa Fe to Albuquerque for servicing and leave Albuquerque in the late evening for Williams.
Wed. Oct. 5th: Arrival in Williams in the early morning. Arrangements made to ride 1:00 P.M. Verde Canyon Railway.
Thu. Oct. 6th: Operate Williams to Grand Canyon and return to Williams with two units and 16 cars A car party will be held at Williams, with one-half of the cars open for the party.
No smoking will be allowed aboard the train to and from the Grand Canyon. This is a National Park Service requirement due to the fear of forest fires.
No
gray water dumping is
allowed in the park. Bring
sanitary lotions to
wash your hands. Also
NO dishwashing, showers,
etc.
Fri. Oct. 7th: The Arizona Limited will operate from Williams to Phoenix and return. We will remain in Phoenix only long enough to run the power around the train. Convention activities in Williams today. Arizona Limited parked at Williams tonight.
Sat. Oct. 8th: Arizona Limited parked at Williams. Convention activities. Car party other half of the cars.
Sun. Oct. 9th: Arizona Limited parked at Williams. Convention activities. Convention banquet tonight.
Mon Oct. 10th: Arizona Limited operate from Williams to Albuquerque. Set out western cars for Amtrak. Parked overnight at Albuquerque. (Note special train is due to arrive Albuquerque shortly before No.3, if special arrives on time can we use the road power to set over connection to rear of No.3 and thus avoid a one day delay to cars going west. Set out cars will be on the point of the special.)
Tue. Oct. 11th: Arizona Limited depart Albuquerque ... travel route of Amtrak's Southwest Chief to Chicago.
Wed. Oct. 12th: Service Arizona Limited at Kansas City at 3 AM. After servicing train at Kansas City operate ahead of No.4 through to Chicago.
