Dave Schumacher passed away on July 2 nd in San Jose, California following a brief illness. He was a resident of Denver, Colorado and Saratoga, Wyoming
Dave was a long time AAPRCO member and has attended every convention since Washington in 1984. He also has ridden on every convention train since joining AAPRCO. Dave was an ardent supporter of Private Rail Cars and at one time owned the PV “George Washington”.
In 1985 he became a Project Manager for the Anschutz Corporation to oversee the acquisition and refurbishment of passenger cars to be used on the Denver to Winter Park Ski Train. He was also responsible for the marketing plans and re-birth of the Ski Train which is still operating today.
Growing up in the East and in California, Dave was fortunate enough to have ridden almost every famous name train in the country prior to Amtrak. Some of the trains he rode to name a few were the Southern Pacific Daylight and Sunset Limited, California Zephyr and the Rio Grande Zephyr, Super Chief, 20 th Century Limited, Southern Crescent, among others. His knowledge of passenger railroading was extensive and he has been featured in interviews on several historical passenger rail television documentaries.
Dave was passionate about private rail cars by either brokering
them or just riding them on a special move or to a convention.
Dave loved preserving railroad history through the acquisition of railroad
artifacts or adding another passenger train set to his model collection.
Most of all Dave loved bringing people together and developing new friendships.
He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
