AAPRCO Mississippian Special Train
New Orleans LA – Monroe LA – Meridian MS –
Gulfport MS – New Orleans LA
May 20 – 25, 2014
AAPRCO Mid-Term Activities
May 22 – 25, 2014
Updated on 5/11/2014
We are planning an all private car special train operating from New Orleans LA to Gulfport MS via Monroe LA and Meridian MS, parking at Gulfport for three nights, and returning from Gulfport to New Orleans on the final day. While the special train is parked at Gulfport, we will conduct a number of activities. These activities include our mid-term membership meeting, mid-term board of directors meeting, and a car party.
The current plan plan for the special train includes travel on Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern and Norfolk Southern. Almost all of the mileage, other than Meridian MS – Hattiesburg MS – New Orleans LA on Norfolk Southern (the route of Amtrak’s Crescent), is off the Amtrak national system and some of it may be considered rare mileage. A number of car owners are advertising space onboard their cars for this trip; please see our Travel Opportunties page for further information. Since this will be an AAPRCO sponsored special train, all passengers traveling on the special train must be a member of AAPRCO or the guest of an AAPRCO member. Information on AAPRCO associate membership is available here.
Here is a summary of the latest planning information, which is subject to change:
Cars must arrive at New Orleans by Sunday night May 18th. Note this is a change from previous plans. This is necessary to allow Amtrak sufficient time to switch, inspect (making and necessary running repairs if possible) and service cars, and to build the special train.
Departure from New Orleans will be be early on Tuesday morning, May 20th, traveling over UP from New Orleans through Alexandria LA to Monroe LA, where the train will interchange to KCS and park in the KCS yard overnight.
On Wednesday, May 21st, the train will depart Monroe and travel over KCS to Meridian MS, where it will park overnight. There are several locations available for parking, depending on the length of the special train.
On Thursday, May 22, the special will depart Meridian and travel over NS to Hattiesburg MS, traverse less than two miles of Canadian National trackage, then operate over KCS to Gulfport MS. We will be parking the special train on a siding, located between US Highway 90 and the Gulf of Mexico, which leads to the Mississippi State Port Authority’s pier. In order to eliminate DHS security concerns at the port, the special train will be parked outside the port’s fenced security zone.
The Courtyard Marriott at Gulfport will be our official hotel. The hotel is about 1.5 miles away from the location where the special train will be parked. If you are planning to stay in the headquarters hotel, a special rate of $149/night has been arranged. When reserving, just say you are with AAPRCO. You can call 228-864-4310 or 800-442-0887 or log on to their website. The rate expires May 1. Follow this link for information about things to see and do in Gulfport and the Missisippi Gulf Coast area.
On Thursday night, there will be a reception in full dome PRAIRIE VIEW for one hour beginning with our arrival at Gulfport.
The AAPRCO mid-term members’ meeting will be held at the hotel on Friday, May 23.
The AAPRCO board of directors’ mid-term meeting will be held at the hotel on Saturday, May 24.
On Sunday, May 25, the special train will depart Gulfport in the morning and travel from Gulfport to Hattiesburg on KCS and from Hattiesburg to New Orleans on NS. This indirect routing is necessary because CSX refused our request, conveyed by Amtrak, to operate the special train over their line from Gulfport to New Orleans. Participating cars may depart New Orleans on Monday, May 26.
There will be a small registration fee, $20 if paid in advance or $45 if paid onsite, which pays your way into the reception, car party and meetings. Everyone (owners, guests, passengers and crew) riding on the special train and those joining us in Gulfport must register. Registration can be accomplished online by following this link, or checks may be sent to AAPRCO, P.O. Box 6307, Columbus, GA 31917.
