Built in 1949 by Pullman-Standard for the Pennsylvania Railroad as sleeper-lounge-observation 8423 FRANK THOMSON. It was one of seven cars in the lot, and was the premier car on flagship trains such as the Spirit of St. Louis, Cincinnati Limited, and Liberty Limited. The comfortable cocktail lounge has undoubtedly hosted many of the famous and well heeled travelers of the 1950’s and retains much of the historic atmosphere. PRR re-assigned the car as a parlor car between New York and Washington, D.C. as long distance train travel dwindled. Eventually, the car was sold into private ownership and fell into disrepair. The car was rescued from scrapping; after significant structural rebuild, it entered private car service on Amtrak in the early 2000’s.
