Mechanical Liaison Officer's reports by Paul L. DeVerter II
The mounting of the required AEI transponders has been covered in prior reports, such as that of 7/17/01, 5/15/01, and particularly 5/27/93. See the drawings in this last report. Here are three simple additional methods of placement.
1. Simply use self tapping drill screws ( say 3/16" or # 10) and place the transponders against the side of the smooth sided car, in the required location. The advantage is it is quick and done. The disadvantage is it drills holes in the side of your car.
2. For Pullman cars, you may make a rectangular plate, and pop rivet it to the back side of the side sill, in the required location. Then pop rivet the AEI transponder to the plate where it stick out below the side sill. Use aluminium rivets to hold the transponder, as steel rivets will probably break the plastic housing.
3. For Budd cars, if you do not want to add a piece to the side sill, here is a simple way to add the transponder to the fluting. This will also work with Pullman fluted cars. Notice the plate behind the transponder, which is needed, as mentioned in the cited earlier postings.
