Mechanical Liaison Officer's Report - Heating Thermostats (5/27/1993)

Subject:  Heating Thermostats (5/27/1993)

[5/27/93] Thermostatic Controls - Frank Dowd mentioned to me that he had been able to adapt the Intertherm thermostats to the existing boxes which control the heat in his Budd built Babbling Brook. I was able to observe this installation on the recent trip to Pinehurst, North Carolina with the Southeast Region. This is a very neat way to blend the old with the new. What Frank had done was to fix the Intertherm thermostats behind what had been the cable controls to the steam floor heat. He had his machinist cut out the ribs in the back, and then was able to mount the thermostat behind the original knob. Also, he was able to mount a light emitting diode, through a new hole drilled in the plate, so that you could tell when the thermostat was activated.

The Intertherm thermostat was put in the same place as the original cable actuator, but yet it is still very sensitive. This is probably because the thermostat is mounted behind a large nickel silver plate, which quickly assumes the temperature of the room being controlled.
