Mechanical Liaison Officer's Report - AEI Transponders (5/15/01)

Subject: AEI Transponders (5/15/01)

AEI transponders are now required before movement by virtually all of the freight railroads, and the AAR. In fact, Amtrak, which has long held out from installing them, has capitulated, and will be putting the tags on its cars. The original UMLER idea was that the Class I railroads would pay for and install the AEI tags on all cars. This obligation has now run out, and you must obtain and put them on yourself, at your expense. See my prior articles on this subject in earlier Mechanical Reports under the titles AEI Transponders and also Reporting Marks. There you will find placement instructions and reporting forms. You may obtain the tags from the manufacturer - Signal Computer Consultants, telephone 888-872-4612, www.aeitag.com.

At the web site you will find prices (Approximately $80 for the required pair).  The procedure is that you measure and obtain the data required, send it in to AAPRCO, get it put on the UMLER system, then put mounting brackets on your car, and have the tags made and installed. Then the AAR (UMLER) needs to be notified that the installation has been made. There may be other sources of the tags, and if you will let me know, I will post them too.

[8/29/2001] I have been advised by TransTexas Rail that another source of AEI Transponders is CCTC International Inc., 4401 South Pinemont Dr., Suite 204, Houston, TX 77041-9327  ph 713-686-2282. This company can test and reprogram your old tags.  The charge for this service, including shipping for two tags, is approximately $28.
