Subject: Brake Systems - D-22 Brakes, Displacement Reservoir (6/08/01)
See last report on this subject 8/31/92. The displacement reservoir is used on a D-22 valve to match the operating characteristics of the UC valve. It is the oval chamber mounted with the auxiliary and emergency reservoirs.
Originally this reservoir had a rubber diaphragm and a spring arrangement inside, with the spring side venting out a hole on the back side of the oval chamber. Greg Gagarin, Amtrak's Asst. GM of Standards and Compliance, and their air brake expert, advises it is perfectly acceptable to remove the diaphragm and spring, providing the vent hole is plugged, and the large bolted flanges are fitted with a gasket to prevent leaking.
