Mechanical Liaison Officer's Report - Cant Deficiency (3/20/1999)

Subject:  Cant Deficiency (3/20/1999)

The FRA rules have provisions which affect the operation of cars on super elevated track. If one rail is raised so that it is at a higher elevation than the other, then the car leans. Mike Trosino, the Amtrak clearance engineer, believes there is no problem with private cars as long as the difference in elevation (or cant deficiency) is 4" or less. Amtrak plans to run on track where the cant deficiency is as much as 6". We are planning to have a meeting with Amtrak on this potential problem next month. Lightweight cars are not as likely to have a problem as are heavyweight cars. Some testing (which can be expensive) may be required. More when I learn more.
